Semi-Mature Trees

M&Nhorticulture specialises in supplying and planting Semi-mature Trees. We supply and plant quality, healthy specimens for both domestic and commercial works.

It is possible to plant container grown Semi-mature Trees throughout the year whilst field grown trees are supplied and planted during the late autumn and winter months.

Semi-mature Trees add instant visual impact to the landscape providing colour, structure, movement and a home for wildlife. They enhance the wider landscape and environment. They also help to screen unsightly views, protect from prevailing winds, help with noise reduction and give privacy. They may be planted singly in small gardens or as groups in larger gardens. Where there is ample space such as country estates screens and shelterbelts may be planted.

The shape and growth rate of a tree varies according to the type. When trees are purchased from the grower they are measured not by their overall height but by the circumference of the girth measured 1 metre above soil level. This measurement, depending on the type of tree and its habit (is it upright, weeping or spreading?), gives an idea of its overall size. An upright tree with a girth of 16-18cms may be about 4.25- 5mtr high whereas a girth measurement of 30-35cms indicates a height of about 6 or 7 metres.

Care must be taken to choose the right tree for your site. Soil type, aspect, local environment and growth habit are some of the considerations. M&Nhorticulture will be pleased to help you with your choice of tree. Semi-mature Trees are ideal to commemorate a special occasion such as births/birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other significant occasions.

M&Nhorticulture have an experienced planting team. Planting methods vary depending on the type of tree and the local conditions. A suitable support system is chosen from a range of staking and ground anchoring systems. All trees are planted using suitable tree planting compost and additional fertilizer to encourage the development of a strong fibrous root system. Depending on the local conditions options such as tree guards, watering systems and root barriers to protect paving, foundations and features such as ponds.

We supply and plant various types of Trained Trees. The branches of these trees are trained onto wooden frames of different shapes.

Pleached trees are suitable for planting against walls or may be used for screening and walkways. Hornbeams and limes are commonly used for this type. Pleached trees usually have a clear stem of 2 metres above which the tree is trained into 4 or 5 rows forming a square. Large triangular shapes are also available.

Roof trees are ideal for patios and terraces. They have a flat roof-shaped canopy with a clear stem of about 2 metres.

Espalier trees are more traditional used very often for training fruit trees. Espaliers can planted against a wall or in the open to define different parts of a garden – especially used in vegetable/kitchen gardens.
