Instant Hedges
Instant Hedges instantly define a boundary. Depending on the type and size used they can provide instant privacy, shelter, reduce noise and help deter unwanted visitors. They may also be planted within a garden to define different areas. They will grow gracefully and will last for generations providing interest throughout the year. Instant Hedges are shrubs grown specifically for the purpose and depending on the type can be planted at heights up to 2 metres and more tall!
Depending on the type used Instant Hedges can be formal or informal, evergreen or deciduous. They provide natural habitats for birds and other wild life as well as providing interesting visual impact throughout the year.
Formal hedges produce a hedge where the individuality of each plant is not seen whereas some or the entire outline of shrubs in an informal hedge may be seen.
Shrubs that are used for formal hedges include Hornbeam, Beech (green and purple), Hawthorn, Holly, Privet, Cherry Laurel and Portuguese Laurel.
Shrubs that are used for informal hedges include Berberis, Escallonia, Pyracantha, Shrub Roses and some floribundas, Cotoneaster and Spiraea.
Lower growing hedges may be formed of Box, Rosemary, Lavender, Cotton Lavender and Crimson Dwarf Prunus.
Instant Hedges may be used as screens. Screens are usually grown taller than a hedge to protect a garden or property from an unwanted feature such as an unpleasant view, noise or strong winds. Shrubs used for forming a screen must be dense, preferably evergreen and quick growing.
M&Nhorticulture works closely with insurance companies to repair/replace hedges damaged as a result of road traffic accidents or damage caused by other means such as vandalism.
